The city goddess Mülheimia watches over the residents of Mülheim and their city. In 1784, exactly 100 years earlier, the municipality of Mülheim had been almost completely destroyed by the most terrible Rhine flood to date. In fact, Mülheim no longer existed!
However, the residents rebuilt the town and within a century made it a thriving trading location. The focus was always on the opposite side of the Rhine, the fast-growing and competitive city of Cologne.
Bernhard Clostermann, who was close to home and politically active, suggested the creation of a Mülheim city fountain to mark the 100th anniversary of the flood catastrophe. Until then, Mülheim had never had such an elaborate and large fountain. His initiative met with approval and so the Cologne sculptor Wilhelm Albermann was commissioned to design a fountain. The total costs are said to have amounted to around 9,500 marks at the time.
