The St. George Church belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran parish and is one of the oldest churches in the Lüneburg Heath.

The origin of the Hanstedt fieldstone church dates back to 980 AD, when the nave was built. This year can be found on the ceiling inside the church. It has a massive fieldstone masonry with round-arched windows. The nave has a flat ceiling and the chancel has a vault from the Gothic period.

A new tower was built in 1887 in place of an old defense tower. It contains a bell from 1465 and 1844.

In the chancel there is a winged altar from the 15th century, mostly decorated with gold. A picture of the Last Supper hangs on the side wall of the church, which has been in front of it since the Reformation. The altar steps are bordered by a rare altar gallery and the windows in the chancel depict images of the birth, baptism, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. The pulpit is from 1702, a beautiful baroque carving with Christ, the 4 evangelists and Peter and Paul. The organ was made by the Emil Hammer Orgelbau workshop (1887/1970).
