The town was given a ring wall 1,221 m long and, along with Nossen and Siebenlehn, was one of the most important possessions of the abbey. As a result, the city had to pay most of the taxes. All residents were obliged to carry out and maintain the building for their living quarters. Quarry stones from the nearby quarry were used as building material. Stones from the hollow, which were called cat heads, were also used. You can still see them today as a market pavement and on the way to Frongasse. Five roads led to five city gates... The market square formed the center of the construction work on the city wall. Five streets led from here to five city gates: the Kreuztor, the Bergtor, the Mühlentor, the Brückentor and the Döbelnschen or Lommatzscher Tor. Since duty had been levied on all carts entering and exiting here since 1657, residents who owned plots of land outside the city wall tried to circumvent the duty by fording through the Mulde. Watchtower rounds with loopholes were used to see the blind spot at the foot of the wall and what was happening outside the gate and the wall.
