In the 19th/20th In the 19th century the leather industry formed the economic basis of the city of Worms. In 1924 Carl Stock modeled the leather worker Karl Stein. The replica of the original lost in 1945 was cast in 1993 by Edwin Hüller at Kunstguss Eschenburg.

In the 19th and the first half of the 20th century, Worms was a center of the German leather industry. In the 3 large leather works in Worms, almost 10,000 people were employed. The tanner monument, as it is officially called, is intended to commemorate this. Today, only the names of streets, squares, social facilities and a few buildings are reminiscent of the heyday of Worms' leather industry.
