It is a replica of a distance column from 1723, erected two years after Elector Friedrich August I ordered the princely chamber to erect stone postal columns in Saxony based on the Roman model. Previously, Zürner had traveled through Saxony and measured it. The pillar in Grossenhain is a gate pillar and stood at the former Dresden Gate. Quarter milestone on the post road Grossenhain - Königsbrück - Kamenz - Bautzen - Görlitz - Breslau.

On via-regia.org you can read that the original route of the Via Regia had fallen into oblivion, only came to our attention in 2003 and was cleared by the Lausnitz Forestry Office, so that today it is again accessible to pilgrims.
