Ruurlo Castle is considered one of the prettiest castles in the Achterhoek, a region with lush vegetation of forests, farmland, country estates and historic castles. His name appears in Dutch archives as early as the 14th century. Although the castle you see today does not date back to this period, it symbolizes the history of architecture over five centuries, and its original layout has remained almost unchanged. Broadly speaking, its current appearance dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries, with some sensitively designed modern additions. The orangery next to the castle is now a recommended restaurant for lunch, high tea or private events. holland.com
