The high cross from 1706 stands on the hill of Bergstrasse between the last footfall station and the Irmgardiskapelle. An extensive restoration in 1984, after the removal of layers of paint, revealed the year the cross was made, the abbreviations: FAWPS.JC, which presumably denote the founder and some Christian symbols that still pose some riddles to the fore.
The slender cross, which is divided into several zones, rises on a three-tiered base. The substructure with an oval cartridge and the initials above it closes with a circumferential profile strip, which is interrupted in the middle by an angel's head, which carries a small console plate. In the middle of the cross shaft there is a shell niche, above it, the relief representation of the Mater Dolorosa, also called Our Lady of Sorrows. Above the slightly protruding cornice is the crowning cross with crucifix above the popularly rendered Christ body there is a representation of a lion, which can be seen once as a symbol of the resurrection of Christ and also as a defense symbol.
The demon-warding lion is often depicted in connection with dragons. That is why the animal heads or animal bodies that form the ends of the cross arms could possibly be dragons. A small figure can be seen above the INRI symbol, which unfortunately cannot be interpreted.
