    From the information board, it's a short climb uphill in the direction of the Ravel cycle path. Approximately in the middle of this section there are two benches that invite you to take a break. A nice, sunlit rest area.

      In anticipation of a German invasion, the Belgian military had provided the strategically important bridge over the Warche valley with explosive ammunition. The bridge was under military guard day and night. In the German regiment "Brandenburg 800 z.b.V." in Münstereifel, two commandos were trained to take the viaduct and occupy Sourbrodt station. The group consisted of 12 men: half were Reich Germans, the other half locals who had been in Germany for some time and had joined the German Wehrmacht. On the morning of May 10th an attempt was made to capture the bridge. However, while fleeing from the attackers, the bridge was blown up. As a result of a hasty radio message from the Germans that the viaduct had been taken intact, the responsible army command set waiting military trains on the march. These arrived en masse in Sourbrodt, where word of the blast had meanwhile been found. As a result, the troops had to continue their journey into the interior of the country via country roads.

        By August 1940, German engineer units had built an emergency bridge that carried the rail track over the Warchetal on two wooden scaffoldings. In 1941/1942 work began on building the passage tunnel that exists today and piling up the dam to give it the shape it has today. The masses of earth to fill up the dam were obtained from the surrounding fields. The traces of this dredging are still visible in the terrain today. The wooden scaffolding remained in the dam, but the iron girders with the rail track were removed.

            On the way in the German-Belgian border area of the "Hohe Fens / Eifel Nature Park", the hiker not only encounters the beautiful nature, but also time and again signposts and information boards of the "Sentier du souvenir" ("Path of Remembrance"). This is a cross-border community project that – over a total length of 94 kilometers, mainly along the former West Wall – reminds of the horrors of war and tyranny and reminds each generation anew to preserve peace (still a very important and, if we look at Eastern Europe, highly topical issue).
            Particularly striking (or better: noteworthy) stations on this "path of remembrance" are marked with an information board - an invitation to pause on one's own (life) path.

              The Vennbahn, which opened on December 1st, 1885, crossed the Warche Valley between the Sourbrodt and Weywertz stations on a three-arched viaduct. During the First World War, the Vennbahn was used to supply the German troops in Belgium. To prevent this from happening again in World War II, a Belgian commando blew up the Weywertzer Viaduct on the night of May 10, 1940. The Germans immediately built an imposing wooden emergency bridge which was replaced by a dam with an underpass tunnel during the war. Passenger traffic was discontinued in the 1960s, followed by military and freight traffic in the 1980s. After a few years of tourist use, the route was finally closed in 2007. Today the railway line serves as a much-used bike and hiking trail. Source: information board on site
