The Invernadero and Matadero Bridges are twins and are part of the Madrid Rio actions carried out on the occasion of the burial of the old M30, today 30th Street, between the years 2003 to 2011. The result of an international competition of ideas, the team MRIO was in charge of the landscaping project for the spaces freed from traffic. This action makes it possible to connect the districts and neighborhoods located on the banks of the river and recover the River for pedestrians and cyclists. To this end, 11 new pedestrian walkways have been built in addition to the rehabilitation of existing bridges and steps.
These bridges provide a new pedestrian and cycling connection between the southern and western residential neighborhoods with the Matadero Madrid cultural center and the new Arganzuela park. They were conceived not only as passage elements but as viewpoints. The idea of creating a pavilion decorated as a prelude to the Slaughterhouse is sought. For this purpose, a vaulted space was designed with the aim of being decorated later. This artistic project was carried out by Daniel Canogar.
The architectural design of the walkways is by the MRIO and West 8 team, which is made up of the architecture studios Burgos & Garrido, Porras &La Casta, Rubio & Álvarez Sala; and by the Dutch landscaping studio West 8, and directed by architects Ginés Garrido and Fernando Porras.
