With a height of more than 8 meters, a volume of approx. 1400 cubic meters and a weight of 3700 tons, the Dengelstein is one of the largest remaining boulders in the Kemptner forest. He was transported during the high glacial ago about 18,000 years ago by the Iller Glacier probably from Rottachberg to here in the Alpine foothills.

It consists of tertiary conglomerate from the bunks. However, it is only a foundling among thousands, which form the largest known boulder distribution of the northern eastern Alps between Rottachberg and Kraftisried in the Allgäu.

At the time of the Celts horses were sacrificed in the fire on Dengelstein, whereby the Dengelstein is also important as a prehistoric place of worship. The area around the Dengelstein was called Alemannic time the name Keltenstein.

There are a few legends about the Dengelstein. So the devil is supposed to denigrate his scythe on Dengelstein when evil is imminent to men. Another legend says that the mischievous wife of a peasant is trapped in the stone and must there dengel her scythe. Both legends can be completely read on boards near the stone.

The iron construction around the Dengelstein is a work of art from the year 1997.

The legend of the Dengelstein appears in the second volume of the novel series Kommissar Kluftinger.

The Dengelstein is freely accessible. The walk from the village Betzenried is about 1.5 km.
