The church of the Order of San Domenico di Trani, with the adjoining convent, for historical, cultural and religious importance, comes immediately after the Cathedral, and is certainly one of the most popular churches in our city. Its history is intertwined with city life, becoming one of the most important constituent elements from the very beginning, so much so as to condition the life of our city. The Dominicans settled in Trani as far back as 1226, most likely to oppose the rich and cultured Jewish colony, one of the most numerous in the Kingdom of Sicily; at the end of 1300 in the Tranese Jewish community there will be 305 neophytes, the synagogues (four, but most likely seven) will be converted into Christian churches, the Jewish cemetery attributed to Charles of Anjou to the Dominican Order; Trani, an ancient Byzantine dominion, also constituted the basis on which to work for a rapprochement of the Eastern and Roman churches.

The current church was built in the second half of the eighteenth century on the area obtained from the demolition of the thirteenth-century church of Santa Croce, of which only the small Romanesque bell tower remains, incorporated into the current building, and the chapel dedicated to San Giovanni, at the interior of the women's penitentiary adjacent to the building.

The foundation of the church of Santa Croce is attributed to the figure of Blessed Nicola Paglia da Giovinazzo, a disciple of San Domenico who, during a stay in Trani in 1224, had a vision in which a radiant cross indicated the chosen place to build a new church and a new monastery for the nascent Dominican order. The monastery was the first Dominican convent established in Puglia. Construction continued in the following years, as evidenced by a donation of one hundred ounces of gold in 1227 to the factory of the Convent of the Predicators. The Santa Croce complex was built in a sparsely urbanized area at the time, relatively far from the medieval village but included in the wall expansion project carried out by Frederick II of Swabia.
