The Jandarma, official name "Jandarma Genel Komutanlığı" (German General Command of the Gendarmerie), is a paramilitary association in Turkey. The date of foundation is generally assumed to be 1839.
According to Law No. 2803, she is responsible for internal security, the maintenance of law and order, law enforcement and border protection, especially in rural areas where the police are not represented. The gendarmerie also takes on military tasks assigned to it by the Turkish General Staff.
Jandarma reports to the General Staff of Turkey in matters of training and to the Minister of the Interior in relation to the maintenance of public order.
Since 1962, the commander of the Jandarma has been an officer in the rank of general. The respective commander of the Jandarma has been a member of the National Security Council since 1980. The current general commander has been General Arif Çetin since August 21, 2017.
The gendarmerie comprises around 180,000 people, including women.
