Legend has it that Lecce was founded by Malennio, a descendant of Minos, with the name of Sybar. Historical evidence, on the other hand, traces the first settlements back to the Messapian age. Lecce certainly grew in importance during the Greek domination first and then Roman. The theater and the amphitheater remain from the Romanesque period, splendidly preserved and still open to visitors. The characteristic of the city, however, is its baroque architecture dating back to the period of Spanish domination. These architectures are so unique of their kind that they give life to a specific branch of the Baroque called Barocco Leccese.
