"... The Sandberg represents the transition from the main terrace to the middle terrace. The several hundred hectares of heathland that once existed here have shrunk to around 12 hectares after the Second World War due to afforestation and lack of grazing. Nevertheless, these areas always represent The area around the Sandberg is where extremely dry and extremely wet areas meet. At the head of the Sandberg, numerous sand lizards use the south to west facing heather slopes for sunbathing. Rare grasshoppers such as the small club insect or the blue-lipped wasteland are here It is also home to numerous rare sand bees and tiger beetles. The heather carnation has one of its last occurrences in the region. At the foot of the Sandberg, groundwater flows from the Bergisches Land come close to the surface. Moist heaths and heather bogs have formed in the depressions. These are habitat for species like Gagelstrauch, Moorlilie, Glockenheide, Sonnentau and Schnabelried. In the vicinity of the wet heath there are even larger alder and moor birch forests. The Haus Bürgel biological station, which is responsible for the area, works with the Mettmann district and the city of Hilden to maintain the heathland. In summer, for example, a flock of moorland sheep grazes around the Sandberg to tend the heather. ... "

The 9-hectare Sandberg Nature Reserve, designated ME-035, is located east of the city of Hilden in the Mettmann district. It borders the 8-hectare Hildener Heide Nature Reserve, south of Sandberg (ME-028) to the south, and the 36-hectare Hildener Heide Nature Reserve, Schönholz (ME-003) to the southwest. It is bordered to the east by residential areas of the cities of Haan and Solingen. To the northwest lies the Hilden City Forest, which is also partially protected.
