Inaugurated in February 1933, the Cáceres Museum occupies two palace-houses in the Monumental City: the Palacio de las Veletas, which houses the archeology and ethnography sections, and the Casa de los Caballos, which houses the collection of Fine Arts from 1992.

Under the Renaissance cloister of the Palacio de la Veletas is the best preserved Hispano-Muslim cistern in Spain and one of the best in the world. This magnificent cistern is one of the surviving remains of the Almohad military fortress, since the building that houses it was restructured in the 16th century and remodeled in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The cistern, which continues to collect the rain that falls on the Renaissance patio that covers it, is one of the largest of its time, hence its spectacular nature, enhanced by the golden light that pours from the zenith towards the five naves composed of horseshoe arches.
