The Temple House was part of the settlement of castle guards in front of the castle, the historical core of the medieval town of Erbach, surrounded by the arms of the Mümling in the area of today's Im Städtel street. Castle guards are documented in Erbach in 1303 as Castrenses, and are first mentioned by name in 1372.

The construction of the building by the Knights Templar, as is assumed from the name, is a legend, as is the case with the other Knights Templar houses in the Odenwald. The name can be proven in the 18th century at the earliest. Rather, it was a seat and allod of the Echter family. Conrad (Conze) Echter, documented in Erbach from 1366 to 1385, is considered the builder of the Stone House in the Echterschen Hof. After the Echters von und zu Mespelbrunn, so called from 1412 since Hammann I, the house came to the Counts of Erbach-Erbach in 1676.

The Erbacher Tempelhaus was built in 1378 as a Burgmannenhaus and was part of the former Erbach Castle. The building was owned by the Echter family, best known as Echter von und zu Mespelbrunn.
In later history, the temple house was used, among other things, as a district office and hospital.
The building is currently unused.
A connection between the name of the house and the Templar Order is incorrect, since the name has existed since the 18th century at the earliest.
