This theatrical performance, completely sung, consists of two acts that are performed on August 14 and 15. Describes the death and coronation of the Virgin through a series of scenes and paintings: the death of Mary, the night procession followed by hundreds of participants with candles, the morning procession, the afternoon funeral procession at streets of Elche, the staging of the funeral, the assumption and the coronation in the basilica.

The mystery of Elche is a theatrical performance, a mystery that has been given every year since the Middle Ages in Elche, where it is also known as La Festa.
The performance is given every 14 and 15 August in the Basílica de Santa Maria.
Recent research suggests that it originated around the second half of the 15th century .
This contradicts a local tradition that links the creation of the mystery to the reconquest of Elche in 1265 and the discovery of the statue of the Virgin on December 29, 1370 in the nearby town of Santa Pola. This piece is one of a kind as it has been performed continuously to this day. It has special rights, because the Council of Trent forbade theatrical performances in churches, except the Misteri d'Elx. It was Pope Urban VIII who, in 1632, gave the village of Elche permission to continue this performance.
