Trafalgar Square is the largest public square and has been a central meeting place in London since the Middle Ages. This is where Whitehall Street comes together from Westminster, The Mall from Buckingham Palace and Pall Mall from St James’s Palace. You can reach the City of London via Strand Street. Leicester Square is in the immediate north.

In the middle of the square there is a monument that the Londoners erected to Admiral Nelson in gratitude for the English victory over the French and Spanish, who were allied in the Battle of Trafalgar. Admiral Lord Nelson was mortally wounded in this famous battle (1805) and was eventually brought back to London and buried in St Paul's Cathedral.
The Nelson's Column with the admiral on top is 51 meters as high as Nelson's flagship HMS Victory from keel to masthead and was built in 1842. At the base of the column are four bronze lion sculptures created by Sir Edwin Landseer.

To the north of Nelson's Column are the fountains created by Sir Edwin Lutyens. These two fountains are replacements for two old fountains now located in the Canadian cities of Ottawa and Regina. The western fountain is a memorial to Admiral Jellicoe, the eastern fountain to Admiral Beatty.

At the southern corners of the square are the statues of Generals Napier and Havelock. In the northeast corner there is an equestrian statue of George IV and in the northwest corner there is an empty plinth (see The Fourth Plinth). There is also a bronze bust of Admiral Cunningham at the foot of the stairs leading to the terrace in front of the National Gallery.

At the northern end of Trafalgar Square is the National Gallery, a major art museum. The church of St Martin-in-the-Fields is located in the north-east of the square and concerts are often held there, including: from the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. The Canada House, built in 1827, on the west side of the square houses the consular and cultural department of the Canadian Embassy. On the east side is the South Africa House, built in the 1930s and in front of which many anti-apartheid demonstrations took place in the 1980s as it houses the South African Embassy.

Have a look at the lion's paws. Sir Edwin Landseer got a dead lion as a model from the London Zoo, but it decomposed before he was finished. So he improvised and the lion's paws are actually: Cat paws.
