Since 1900, the Wittenbergen lighthouse, together with the Tinsdal lighthouse, has formed the Wittenbergen–Tinsdal lighthouse line for ships traveling downstream of the Elbe in the Rissen district of Hamburg.
The construction of the steel lattice towers began in 1899, at the same time as the Billerbek lighthouse, which, together with the Tinsdal lighthouse, formed the Billerbek – Tinsdal lighthouse until 1960. Due to a change in the fairway of the Lower Elbe, the 30 meter high and four ton heavy lower light was moved nine meters to the south in September 1905.

Since November 29, 1984, the Blankenese Lower Lighthouse, together with the Blankenese Upper Lighthouse, has formed the Blankenese guideline for ships traveling up the Elbe.
