The "Battle of the Silver Helmets" (from which the museum takes its name) took place on August 12, 1914 in the Limburg town of Halen.
This last cavalry battle at division level in Western Europe resulted in a victory for the Belgian armed forces; the only one she achieved on German troops during WW1 without help from the Allies.
The battlefield and the strategic Iron Mining farm are now as they were before the battle.
The museum, located in the picturesque hamlet of Velpen, keeps the memory of this battle alive. You can follow the course of the battle on an impressive model of 30 m2. You will discover a unique collection of authentic pieces (colorful uniforms, paintings, ...) and of course the famous "Silver Helmets".
