Walderbach Monastery

Burgrave Heinrich I of Regensburg originally founded an Augustinian monastery in Walderbach, which his son, Burgrave Otto I of Regensburg, converted into a Cistercian monastery in 1143. Walderbach was a foundation of the Regensburg burgraves and their related Landgraves von Stefling. The Cistercian founding convention came from Waldsassen.
Twice, in 1428 and 1433, the Walderbach Monastery was plundered and burned by the Hussite troops invading the Upper Palatinate. In addition to numerous sacral works of art, a large part of the monastery documents also fell victim to the flames. The reconstruction of the monastery lasted until the end of the 15th century.
In the course of the Reformation initiated by Ottheinrich in 1556, the monastery was dissolved and administered by secular administrators. At the end of 1562 the last member of the order left the monastery and in 1563 it was officially dissolved. In 1669 the monastery was re-established and resettled by Cistercians from the Aldersbach monastery. The buildings were rebuilt in the Baroque style at the end of the 17th century.
The monastery was finally dissolved in 1803 in the course of secularization. The realities and some buildings were auctioned off in 1804. The church became a Catholic parish church and the monastery buildings were successively used as a rent office, district court, rectory and a forester's apartment. A brewery was set up in the western side wing.
The former chapel of the prelate is decorated with a ceiling painting by Cosmas Damian Asam depicting St. Mary Magdalene as a penitent. Also worth seeing is the monastery's atmospheric two-storey banquet hall with a ceiling painting by Otto Gebhard from around 1765/70 depicting the "banquet of the Egyptian Joseph". The ballroom offers a suitable ambience for the concert series "Festive Concerts in the Baroque Hall" that takes place here every year.
Today the museum of the district of Cham is housed in one wing. The library and archive were dissolved and taken to Amberg and are now in the Amberg State Archive.
