The Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Foresta is one of the four erected by San Francesco.
In the summer of 1225, at the invitation of Cardinal Ugolino (future Pope Gregory IX), Francis was invited to Rieti to take care of his eyes, as a much appreciated doctor was present in the city. Once in the city, however, the saint prefers to move to a secluded place and so he stays for more than fifty days in this sanctuary.
