Hitler's German labor camp
Before World War II, the area of the Jaworzno camp and the sub-camp in Chrusty belonged to Jaworznickie Mines S.A. in Jaworzno.
On June 15, 1943, the Germans established a sub-camp of KL Auschwitz-Birkenau - Arbeitslager "NeuDachs" No. 147 here.
Shortly before the advent of the Red Army, on January 17, 1945, the Germans led a column of prisoners from the sub-camp in Jaworzno. They had a 250 km route to KL Gross-Rosen in Lower Silesia (the so-called death marches).
Establishment of the Central Labor Camp in Jaworzno
On April 6, 1945, the Ministry of Public Security, on the basis of Circular No. 42, established the Central Labor Camps, establishing camps in Warsaw, Poniatowa, Krzesimów, Potulice and Jaworzno. However, the Central Labor Camp in Jaworzno started operating even before the circular came into force, in February 1945.
The Germans left an undamaged camp consisting of 15 wooden barracks, brick baths, kitchen, hospital, delousing facilities, workshops and warehouses. The camp was fenced with a double strip of barbed wire connected to high voltage, in addition, there were 12 brick watchtowers with machine guns and searchlights in the fence. The camp prison was located in the premises of the former camp laundry. The northern part of the camp, from the side of the Kraków-Katowice road, was protected by a wall 5 m high, built after the war.
COP Jaworzno was subordinate to the Department of Prisons and Camps of the Provincial Office of Public Security in Krakow, commanded at that time by Lieutenant Jakub Hammerschmidt (from 1946 Jakub Halicki).
