From leather factory to museumLeather production shaped the economic profile of the 20th century and, with its 16 hectares of land, also the townscape of Hirschberg.
At the end of the 19th century, a small tannery on the banks of the Saale became one of the largest sole leather factories in Germany and Europe.
Before the Second World War, the Heinrich Knoch AG leather factory employed 1,500 workers and employees. 600,000 cowhides were processed annually, of which 480,000 were made into sole leather, 20,000 into upper leather and 95,000 into shoe welts.
After switching to upper leather tanning in 1965, by 1989 the VEB leather factory had tanned around 30 different types of leather and 2 million square meters of leather for shoes and clothing per year. The company employed 900 people. The company went bankrupt in 1992 and was demolished between 1993 and 1996. In 1993, the town of Hirschberg acquired the company archive, numerous objects relating to leather production and town history, as well as the listed administration building. The Museum of Tannery and Town History has been located here since 1997, and was founded on October 2, 1997 with the opening of the special exhibition "Even the best bridge is trampled on." On this property here between the museum building and the Saale there once stood a house that was the ancestral home of the Knoch family in Hirschberg for 120 years.
Four generations of this family lived there and practiced their craft as tanners.
