The Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH (HDW) in Kiel was renamed ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems GmbH (TKMS) at the end of 2012. The history of the largest German shipyard goes back to the founding of an iron foundry and steam boiler building in 1838.
