Magnificent example of a rock castle from the 12th century. Its walls are raised on the rock, resulting in a spectacular view of the homage tower from its base.

HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION
Partially restored, we will find part of the walls that made up its battlemented wall and reinforced with towers at its corners. The cistern is preserved in the parade ground and the homage tower has a Gothic door with a pointed arch. Its interior has a spiral staircase that allows access to the upper terrace.

In the 16th century it remains one of the strongest castles in the kingdom, which was known and amazed by how difficult it was to access, how ingenious its entrance was and the ability to house in a certain place -today unknown to us (perhaps inside the rock) - more than 500 men.

It appears cited in the first Fuero de Molina, given by Don Manrique de Lara, for which reason it is assumed that it originated from an Arab fortress. During the times of King Ferdinand III the Saint, the third lord of Molina, Gonzalo Pérez de Lara, rebelled against the monarch, took refuge in it. Given the impregnability of the castle, they had to agree on the "Concordia de Zafra", by which the current Molina de Aragón would become part of the crown of Castile on the death of Don Gonzalo, losing its independent status.

Only its exterior can be visited.

CURIOSITIES
In 2016, scenes for the 6th season of the popular series Game of Thrones were shot here. In chapter 3, in a long scene of more than five minutes, the castle appears as "The Tower of Joy".

An enigma for historians is the space delimited by the fortress walls, which barely leaves room for weapons depots or food stores. The hypothesis that there were large caves excavated in the rock on which it sits is considered.
