The Gateway to the town crosses the River Teme at the northern end of Teme Street. There has been a known river crossing at this point since the 13th century and the bridge has been strengthened and widened at various points during its history, one renovation said to be the work of the world renowned road and bridge builder, Thomas Telford. The bridge has an unusual bend in the middle, said to be an extension following the river changing course during severe floods in the 16th century. The bridge also forms the dividing line between Worcestershire and Shropshire, the border running along the centre of the River Teme. The bridge is a National Heritage, grade one, listed monument and during 2012 received its latest series of renovations and strengthening leaving it ready for service into the next century and beyond.
