Built on the remains of the Muslim Great Mosque, it managed to rise to the rank of basilica in 2007.
Its Gothic-style construction began in the 14th century.
After a fire, the façade had to be rebuilt, but this time following a Baroque style.
In 1983 it was declared a National Monument, today corresponding to the figure of Asset of Cultural Interest.

The Basilica of Santa María is the oldest religious building in the city of Alicante, dating back to the 14th century. It was built on the remains of the High Mosque of Alicante. The basilica consists of a single nave and has side chapels between the buttresses.
After a fire in the 15th century, the Basilica of Santa María had to be rebuilt. Therefore, the facade is Baroque and is topped by two asymmetrical towers built in the 14th and 18th centuries respectively.
Inside, the 18th-century Rococo main altar, the Chapel of Baptism, the Immaculate Conception and the Communion stand out. There is also a huge baptismal font from the 16th century and a Valencian Baroque organ from 1653.
