The Defense Canal or Peel Canal was dug in the Peel in 1939 - from Griendtsveen - as part of the Peel-Raamstelling. The canal reaches to the Raam, a small river above Mill. It served as a drainage canal and anti-tank ditch, so it was soon given the name Defense Canal. Wikipedia

This ANTI-TANK CANAL, known at the time as the Defense Canal, now the Peel Canal, was constructed in 1939. Since the canal also aims to improve water management in the agricultural region, it was possible to dig the canal in the context of job creation. The route of the canal was partly determined by the existing Rode Beek, partly by the location of existing extraction sites and the water management requirements.
