Ryde Pier is really three piers in one. A second, parallel pier was built in 1864 to support a horse-drawn tramway. This ran from the pier head as far as the pier gates and then through the town to provide a connection for steamer passengers with Ryde's original rail terminus at St John's Road, a mile to the south.

Ride along the wooden planks of the pier as you first land at the Isle of Wight via the FastCat passenger ferry. This is your first view of the island, and perhaps the last too if you plan on returning this way as well.

Before the pier was built, passengers to Ryde had the uncomfortable experience of coming ashore on the back of a porter and then, depending on the state of the tide, having to walk as far as half a mile across wet sand before reaching the town. The first pier was finished in 1814 and was 527m long; today’s pier measures 704m.
