The thick round brick tower (around 1500) stands a considerable distance in front of the city wall on Altperver Straße. It once belonged to the extensive Vortoranlage of the Altperver gate, the main entrance into the old part of town. In the upper part of the tower is decorated by a frieze with the coats of arms of the electors, the emperor and the city Salzwedel. The figure in the niche is supposed to be Emperor Charles IV - which probably gave the tower its name.
