Wurzen Castle is one of the oldest castle buildings in the German-speaking world. It shows the transition from a castle complex to a residential palace and is considered an incunabula of Central German palace architecture.

History of Wurzen Castle

1491-97.: Built as a residence for the bishop of Meissen Johann VI. from Saalhausen

1508: The castle is structurally expanded

1519: After a fire in the castle, Johann VII von Schleinitz had the castle renewed

1522: A small gatehouse is built between the castle and the cathedral

1581 : The last bishop Johann IX. von Haugwitz resigns. The castle becomes the seat of the Wurzen Abbey

1631 : A fire damages both castle towers

1670 : The towers are restored

after 1945: Use of the palace as the headquarters of the police

2002: The Wedekind family acquires the castle complex

2004 : A hotel and a restaurant open in the castle
