After there had been only one evangelical Christian in Attendorn in 1820, their number grew in the following years due to the onset of industrialization and especially due to the settlement of the Landwehr Battalion 35.[1] The first Protestant service in Attendorn was celebrated in 1839.[2] Nine years later, the military community developed into the evangelical parish of Attendorn. The first evangelical church with 200 seats was built in 1855 in the garden of the vicarage.

The Church of the Redeemer is a listed church building of the Protestant parish in Attendorn. The massive, cruciform central building made of embossed ashlars has a floor area of 335.61 square meters, and the tower standing on the side has a floor area of 32.45 square meters.[3] Colored stone was used for the exterior design.
