On the east wall, the former ramparts and moats of the once fortified city were redesigned with green spaces and water areas. The project was completed in 2004. The new system follows the medieval structures of the former fortifications. In the future, the redesign will also be continued on the Südwall. Benches and a small water fountain invite you to take a break at one of the two new moats and offer a view of the “Platz der Deutschen Einheit” or the Jewish Museum Westphalia (picture). The town moat, rampart and wall surround the urban area of today's old town, which has become more and more densely built over time. After 1306, three city gates interrupted the medieval ring of walls, pointing to the city's national transport connections.

The Lippetor at the Lippe crossing in the north and the Essener Tor in the south of the city offered a passage on the city's main axis as part of the long-distance connection from Essen to Münster. The Recklinghausen Gate in the east connected Dorsten with Recklinghausen via today's Marler Straße. This connection is primarily of regional importance. Dorsten as well as Recklinghausen exercised the function of an administrative center for the electoral Cologne Vest.

The west side of the city had no wall opening. The state border between the archbishopric of Cologne and the county, later duchy of Kleve, ran along this side of the city on the other side of the Scholzbach to Gahlen.
