"... Most of the bodies of water in the Teverene Heide are the result of clay and sometimes sand mining. They are very diverse and range from shallow ponds, which can dry out in summer, to shallow ponds and larger, deep lakes with steep banks. The resulting depressions were shaped after the end of the mining and left to their own devices, some of which were also reforested on the shore.

The lakes created by clay quarrying show different shore vegetation. Colonization with aquatic plants and reed species is not yet very advanced on younger lakes, as this is made more difficult by steep banks, shading, changing water levels and fine sludge stirred up from the bottom of the water. Advanced stages of siltation can be found on older bodies of water.

However, the resulting lakes can also gradually silt up again, i.e. be refilled with organic material. The growth of water and bank plants reduces the free water surface, since the plant material is often only incompletely decomposed. The silting process is further promoted by the fall of leaves. Low moors can arise from silted up nutrient-rich water bodies. In the nutrient-poor, acidic environment, siltation can initiate raised bog formation.

Swallow Lake

The Schwalbensee is surrounded by deciduous trees. Dense vegetation has developed in places along its banks. Herd-like populations of the pond horsetail (Equisetum fluviale) can be seen in the middle of the lake. So-called pond-horsetail communities can be found in mostly shaded water bodies ranging from mesotrophic (medium nutrient supply and medium biomass production) to weakly eutrophic (high nutrient supply (N and P) and high biomass production).

They are regarded as a preliminary stage of reed stands (NABU nature conservation station 2004/2005, 2nd interim report FFH/NSG Teverener Heide). ..."
