The mountain inn under the peak of Pico Ruivo is actually called Casa de Abrigo.
It cannot be compared to the mountain inns in the Alps. Inside the Casa it almost feels like you are sitting in a living room.
Nevertheless, it has its own atmosphere and you can refresh yourself with hot or cold drinks. There are also homemade pastries and the typical souvenirs

The honey cake was moldy and the innkeeper was unfriendly. The forest was littered with toilet paper and it smelled awful because the toilet was out of order. Afterwards, we went to Achada do Teixeira, 2km away, where there was a wider selection at normal prices.

The hut underwent extensive renovations in August 2019 and now offers a modern, open-plan living space for hikers. It has basic facilities such as drinking water, restrooms, and a sheltered indoor area.

Overnight stays are generally possible, but only with prior approval from the Secretaria Regional do Ambiente (Regional Environmental Office). Waiting lists for overnight stays exist, so early booking is recommended.

The easiest access to the hut is via Achada do Teixeira, which can be reached by car. From there, the PR1.2 trail leads to the hut in approximately 1.5 hours.
