Up until 1991 the ferry port in Ayamonte was the only connection between Spain and Portugal in Huelva. The opening of the International bridge in 1991 was fundamental in opening this area of Spain, but it doesn't allow bikes. The ferry still carries cars and is very popular amongst local and tourists alike. It is an ideal way to visit Villa Real de Santo Antonio in Portugal, and to view Ayamonte along the banks of the Guadiana River.
