                  In politics and contemporary history, both the ideological conflict and the physically sealed off border, which divided Europe during the Cold War, are referred to as the Iron Curtain, after the namesake from the theater building. After the Second World War and up to the revolutions in 1989, it formed the dividing line between the market-oriented, democratic states in the West and the planned-economy, real-socialist dictatorships in the East. After Yugoslavia's secession from the Soviet Union in 1948, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria sealed themselves off from Yugoslavia at their borders in much the same way as they did from the "capitalist" states.

                  The inner-German border between the Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR and the Berlin Wall were part of the Iron Curtain.
