The first mention is from 1020 and the medieval town of Figueres was built around it. It was probably built on a primitive early Christian church. Remains of the early Romanesque temple (10th-11th centuries) are the remains of the north-facing walls with a loophole to the left of the nave, at the foot of the bell tower. In the 14th century, the Gothic temple was built on top of the Romanesque building. This new building reached to the present cruise and was of a single ship with vaults of cruise and buttresses, without cruise nor girola.
In 1578, the neoclassical façade was rebuilt, with a large bull's eye that gives light to the whole nave. Later it underwent numerous extensions (in 1678 the Chapel of Sorrows began, on the north side) and modifications. In the 18th century, the old Gothic capital was replaced by a transept and a polygonal apse. At the end In 1895 the dome was built according to a project by the architect Josep Azemar i Pont. [1]
Cimbori
During the Civil War the church suffered significant destruction (fires and demolition). In 1941, Amadeo Llopart, Enric Mora and Josep Maria Sagarra, from Barcelona, carried out the project for the restoration of the temple. Between 1941 and 1948 it was rebuilt with stone ashlars, the transept crowned by the octagonal dome, following the Gothic style of the old nave, thus achieving a unified, sober and monumental ensemble. Of the original gothic temple the ship with the vaults of cruise and the buttresses is conserved.
Salvador Dalí was baptized in this church.
