The vineyard, one of the local recreation areas of Hünfeld, is surrounded by Hünfeld, Molzbach, Haselstein and Großenbach. If you want to see the special features of the "Weinberg" nature reserve, you have to take a closer look. The "Enzian Schillergrasrasen" is represented there with an occurrence that is also of national importance. The pasque flower is easier to recognize for laypeople in botanical science, whose blue and purple flowers adorn the vineyard in the warm season. Nowhere else in Hessen is there such a large occurrence of this plant, which thrives on the nutrient-poor limestone soil.
But the biodiversity on the site in the east of Hünfeld, which extends above the prison, has decreased in recent years, reports Ewald Sauer from the Rhön Biosphere Reserve. As a representative of the Upper Nature Conservation Authority, he is responsible for the area that is largely owned by the City of Hünfeld. “In order to maintain and improve the quality of the nature reserve, a new grazing concept should ensure that the nature reserve“ Weinberg ”maintains or even improves its quality in the long term. From now on, the area is used by a herd of sheep and goats, which is led by a shepherd.
The 400 m high Rößberg forms almost a unit with the vineyard. At its highest point there is an observation tower that can be seen from afar. From this one has an outstanding all-round view.
