The Max Monument is a statue erected between 1824 and 1828 in the middle of the cathedral square in the old town of Passau.

The bronze statue has its back to St. Stephen's Cathedral and shows the first Bavarian King Maximilian Joseph I in coronation regalia. His right hand holds a scepter pointing downwards, with which the ruler leans on a cuboid on which the words "Charta Magna" are read and on which lies the royal crown. The cuboid with the inscription symbolizes the Bavarian constitution of 1818. The statue is supported by a high granite base, which is adorned with the following inscription from the year 1824:

To the beloved king Maximilian Joseph I.
his loyal people in the Unter-Danube district on Hornung 16, 1824
On the back are the words:

As history may his deeds, so may this metal
hand down his image to generations to come.

In honor of King Max I Joseph, on the occasion of his 25th anniversary of reign on February 16, 1824, it was decided to erect a monument to him on the Cathedral Square. The design for the work was provided by the engraver and art teacher Karl Gottfried Eichler, the model for the statue was by the sculptor Christian Jorhan the Younger, and the bronze casting was carried out by the bell founder Georg Samassa.

The foundation stone of the monument was laid in 1824, and the statue itself was unveiled four years later. The inauguration took place on October 12, 1828, with Mayor Joseph Unruh delivering the ceremonial address.

In January 1924, trees were felled on the Cathedral Square because, among other things, they obstructed the view of the Max monument. Several citizens protested unsuccessfully. Even the removal of the Max monument was seriously considered at one point: On October 12, 1961, the city council rejected the police's "removal request." The police justified their request by arguing that the monument was not in the right place and "would hinder the planned paving of the Cathedral Square."
