Stevensweert is a very special place. He has been writing history since the eighty-year war of 1633 and offers a lot to see with his partly reconstructed fortress. But it also has a marina with over 800 moorings and a very nice town center. Many small restaurants and a quaint old town invite you to linger.

The fortified town of Stevensweert has everything to be counted among the most beautiful villages in Limburg: history, beauty, atmosphere and located in a beautiful part of the Netherlands.
The biggest attraction of Stevensweert is the village center itself. This is one of the most picturesque villages you will find in Limburg. Specific buildings worth mentioning are the former town hall, which now houses the Streekmuseum Stevensweert/Ohé en Laak, the eighteenth-century St. Stephen's Church and the striking former Reformed Church. This monumental building now serves as a wedding location and a place where events are organized, such as concerts.

During the Eighty Years' War, the original village of Stevensweert was expanded into a fortified town by the Spanish in 1633. An earthwork with seven bastions and five ravelins was built. Part of Stevensweert is a protected site. The fortifications are still evident in the town's unique street pattern. At the Stevensweert-Ohé en Laak Regional Museum, you can learn all about the history of the fortified town. You can also visit the model of the fortress, Stevensweert Castle, and Walburg Castle.

The restored historic center of Stevensweert is a listed building. Stately old buildings, centuries-old monuments, and streets paved with Maas stone and clinker bricks. Stevensweert exudes a unique atmosphere. The magnificent Jan van Steffeswert Square houses the Gouvernementhuis (Government House) from 1732, the Catholic St. Stephen's Church from 1781, the Protestant Church from 1819, and the former town hall, designed by the famous Roermond architect Pierre Cuypers. In this former town hall, you can watch a short film about the history of the fortified town of Stevensweert. The VVV guide will then lead you on a walking tour through the historic center and visit the Catholic and Protestant churches.

During our tour on the Molenplas premium hiking trail, we also made a detour to the small town of Stevensweert. The village, located directly on the Belgian border, was built into a fortress town by the Spanish in 1633 during the Eighty Years' War.
