The Evangelical Lutheran St. Laurentius Church in Schweina and its surroundings are an eye-catcher in the town. The late medieval church building with the half-timbered extension from the historicist period is very beautiful.
Next door is the Friedrich Fröbel Kindergarten in a half-timbered ensemble.

Saint Laurentius, to whom this church in Schweina is dedicated, is one of the early Christian martyrs from a time when Christianity was still forbidden. He was Archdeacon of the Pope and asked by the pagan emperor to hand over the treasure of the Church. Laurentius asked for three days, in the meantime distributed the church property among the poor inhabitants of Rome and after the agreed time came with the poor to the emperor to present them to him as the treasure of the church. He was then martyred to death, legend has it that he was alive on a grate - this attribute can be seen in many depictions of Saint Laurentius - roasted over coals. He is said to have been in good spirits and told his executioner on the one hand he was ready, whether he didn't want to turn him over.
The memorial day of Saint Laurentius in the calendar of saints is August 10th.

A highlight here is the trombone choir from Schweina, which plays on all church holidays.
From the church square you can also watch the annual torch fire on December 24th on the Antoniusberg.

Personally, I only know the ugly Schweina along the main street: dilapidated, old, forgotten houses, dirt, and the AfD. But if you walk along the side streets, Schweina is a truly pretty little place. Lots of well-kept half-timbered houses and front gardens.

Unfortunately, the church is locked and cannot be visited. The church grounds can only be entered and exited from the kindergarten. The other gate is locked.
