    This nature reserve is known primarily for its abundance of birdlife. It consists of fish ponds and pastureland and is both the breeding ground and heart of "De Wijers," the largest contiguous pond area in the Benelux. A unique place to observe native birds.

      De Wijers is the largest continuous pond area in Belgium and has no fewer than 1,175 ponds and is good for 700 hectares of water and reeds. This alternation of water, meadows and forests makes the area beautiful and interesting for species such as the tree frog. This wetland nature reserve is spread over the municipalities of Zonhoven, Lummen, Diepenbeek, Hasselt, Genk, Heusden-Zolder and Houthalen-Helchteren, centrally in Limburg. Many rare animal and plant species find their habitat in this enchanting landscape. Many cycling and walking paths run through the Nature Reserve, along which you can enjoy this particularly varied area.
