For around 140 years, there were institutions on this site that were used for state persecution and repression. For decades, the building complex was used as a workhouse. Many of those interned here became victims of Nazi crimes. Most recently, during the SED regime, the name "Rummelsburg" stood for a men's prison notorious for political imprisonment.

At the end of October 1990, the Rummelsburg prison was closed and after a long time

Vacant as of 2007 developed into a residential complex.
