The Exmoor pony is a medium-sized English pony breed. It is the most original and feral of the British small horses; some herds still roam free on the moors of south-west England (e.g. Exmoor National Park, a Wild Stud). Claims that Exmoor ponies have a seventh molar, which other horse breeds do not have, are based on misinterpretation. Due to its phenotype, the Exmoor horse is attributed by some researchers to be particularly close to the European wild horse, the tarpan.[2] The Exmoor Pony has a stocky, strong build. The Exmoor's coat color is blackish-brown, which can range in shades from beige-tan to dark brown-black. However, most Exmoor horses are reddish brown or hazel in color. Brown is a coat color proven for the European wild horse[3]. It would be relevant whether the European wild horses also had the Fallow gene, which has not yet been genetically identified, or not. With a brown ground color, the dun gives a sand-colored tone like that of the Przewalski horse, with a black ground color a mouse-grey color similar to that of the Konik. Consequently, brown, black, fawn and mousy colors could have occurred in the European wild horse. Exmoor horses do not carry the lightening dun gene. A lack of the dun gene in the western European Exmoor horse could be understood as an adaptation to woody terrain in central and western Europe, which may have favored a darker color[2]. The Exmoor horse also, like all modern-day wild horses, carries the pangare gene, which causes a light underbody and white mealy mouth. The legs become very dark towards the hooves, and a fine dorsal stripe is often present. As a robust horse, the Exmoor horse is particularly hardy and resistant to many horse diseases. The Exmoor pony's winter coat consists of a soft woolly undercoat and a longer, oily, water-resistant topcoat. As a further adaptation to the weather conditions of the British climate, some original ponies have eye ridges, which protect the eyes from rainwater and snow.

Since the grazing influence of large herbivores contributes to the conservation of open areas with their biodiversity (megaherbivore hypothesis), robust animals such as the Exmoor horse et al. used semi-wild in grazing projects by the Working Group on Biological Environmental Protection (ABU) or the Stichting Taurus. They also support the preservation of the natural and cultural landscape in the Hutewald project in the Solling-Vogler Nature Park.
