The Valley of Hell is like a secret, it is exactly where you would not expect it, next to the highway of the sun and the railway line, along the course of the Arno river.
The stretch of the river between the Romito Bridge and the Ponte dell'Acqua Borra has preserved more than anywhere else typical characteristics of the Valdarno natural landscape with alternating woods and land, partly cultivated, partly abandoned. The steep slopes overlooking the river have been carved over the millennia by the tributaries that have formed the typical impluviums of the borri, rich in mixed woods predominantly of oaks, Turkey oaks and English oaks, and many other species, while in the more humid areas they are present willows, black poplar, alder and elm, and in the warmer ones, rovarella and holm oak, with a typical undergrowth of the Mediterranean scrub.
