The floating moor is so named because it is a unique relic of the history of the Jade Bay. During high storm surges, the salt water pushes under the huge peat body and lifts it up. 1000 years ago, a third of the area of today's Jade Bay consisted of raised bog, which was gradually “cleared away” by heavy storm surges. After the bay was diked, the floating moor remained. Due to repeated break-offs when floating up and down again, it is now only nine hectares in size and will eventually disappear completely.
Building a solid path in the soft and moving ground is a special challenge. “You shouldn't drive the piles too deep, because that would essentially nail the moor to the clay underneath and if it floats up, the peat could tear.
