The complex was built in the 18th century by the Barons of Haxthausen. At the moment it is not open to the public and can therefore only be admired from a distance. The historic arcade that borders the castle's park to the northwest is definitely worth seeing and can also be accessed.
In the 19th century, the Bökendorf Romantic Circle, which included Brentano, Fallersleben and the Brothers Grimm, met at the castle. Annette von Droste-Hülshoff was also part of the literary community. Her novella "The Jew's Beech" refers to a historical criminal case and is set in the region.

Caspar Moritz Freiherr von Haxthausen had today's manor house built in 1769-1771 on the foundations of a 15th century moated castle by the Hildesheim court architect Anton Went for his son Werner Adolph.
In the 19th century, the Bökerhof manor house was the center of the “Bökendorf Romantic Circle” (1810–1834) with the sisters Jenny and Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, the brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, Clemens Brentano and Josef Görres. In 1817 Ludwig Emil Grimm traveled to Bökerhof Castle.
