The Gnevsdorfer Vorfluter is an approximately 11 km long channel between the Havel and the Elbe. It is an artificial Havel drain and serves to relocate the Havel's backwater point downstream. This flood protection system includes the four weirs at Quitzöbel (old arm and puncture weir), Neuwerfen and Gnevsdorf, as well as the Havelberg lock.

The Weir Group Quitzöbel regulates the discharge and the flow rate of the Havel, which used to flow further upstream into the Elbe. In order to avoid backwater in the Havel and its floodplain when the Elbe level is too high, for example, the Havel is diverted further down the Elbe via the Gnevsdorfer receiving water.
